Overall Summary: Every time an animated film comes out with an Asian main character, my brain automatically expects way too much from it as an Asian-American – even with my high expectations, though, Turning Red was a fun and lighthearted film that I enjoyed. My only petty complaint that I have is wanting so badly to see an Asian mom that isn’t entirely suffocating (like Mei’s mom) because, selfishly, that’s not my experience and I’d like to see it represented somewhere. It was lovely to see a teenage Asian girl from Toronto go through the motions of growing up and dealing with puberty and I’m so happy that I was able to experience this movie as a grown up.
